Members of the Green River Area Development District’s (GRADD) Senior Connections AmeriCorps program will once again serve at St. Benedict’s Homeless Shelter on Monday to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Denise Bell, with the Daviess County Emergency Management Agency, will provide tips on staying warm and dry during inclement weather. Additionally, shelter residents will receive donated socks, hats, and gloves provided by GRADD’s Ombudsman Program.
Guests can enjoy a meal of hot dogs and chili, donated by Crosspointe Baptist Church, and a variety of desserts from Cakes and More by Patricia, Aunt D’s Sweets, Canler’s Delicious Recipes, Janice Marie Bakery, Penny Clover Homestead, and pastry chef Patricia Harris. Cheese for the meal will be contributed by GRADD’s Family Caregiver Program.
Residents can also participate in a lively game of bingo, with prizes including hygiene products, sodas, candies, and goody bags. Donations for prizes and other items have been provided by AmeriCorps partner sites, Buff City Soap, God’s Outreach, The King’s Table, and State Representative Scott Lewis.
The AmeriCorps Day of Service, observed annually on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service. It encourages Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy by volunteering to improve their communities.
“Service is a fundamental part of being an AmeriCorps member,” said Mary Ashford, GRADD AmeriCorps Program Assistant. “The Day of Service allows us to come together and amplify our impact on the community.”
