Laughter and excitement filled the aisles of Walmart on KY 54 Wednesday night as local law enforcement members partnered with children to select the perfect holiday gifts. It was the start of the annual “Shop With a Cop” event, organized by the Fraternal Order of Police, bringing joy to local families in need.
The two-night event, which continues Thursday, includes representatives for all three local agencies: the Owensboro Police Department, Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, and Daviess County Detention Center.
Thanks to increased donations this year, the budget was $180 per child, to be spent evenly between toys and necessities such as clothing and personal care items. Officers join families on the mini shopping spree, doing everything from pushing buggies to suggesting the perfect toy.
“It’s a chance for us to give back to the community that supports us,” said Detective Chad Gilbert, one of the event’s lead organizers this year. “We want to make sure our kids are taken care of and have a happy Christmas.”
This year’s program benefitted approximately 115 children, who were selected through a partnership with Family Resource Coordinators at Owensboro and Daviess County Public Schools. Officers and deputies can also nominate families they encounter in their work who may need a little extra support during the holidays.

“This event is about more than just shopping,” Gilbert said. “It’s about building trust and showing kids that we’re here to help, no matter the need.”
The atmosphere inside Walmart buzzed with excitement Wednesday evening as children eagerly scanned shelves for toys, winter coats, and other essentials. Many officers brought their own families to lend a hand, creating a festive and collaborative environment.
For Gilbert and fellow organizer Officer Josh Bennett, this year marks a new chapter. Both stepped into leadership roles for the first time following the retirement of the event’s longtime coordinators. Gilbert, who has participated in “Shop With a Cop” for six years, said the experience is always a highlight of the holiday season.
“This is something I look forward to every year,” he said. “It’s a chance to work with my colleagues and connect with the community in a meaningful way.”
The FOP raises funds for the event throughout the year. The program also benefits from a strong partnership with Walmart, which provides space and logistical support for the shopping event.
“Walmart has been an amazing partner,” Gilbert said. “We couldn’t do this without their help.”

Gilbert emphasized that the event is about more than just fulfilling material needs.
“We want to make sure these kids feel cared for and supported,” he said. “It’s important to show them that we’re here for them, not just during this event, but whenever they need us.”
As “Shop With a Cop” wraps up for the year, the FOP is already looking ahead to next year’s program. Gilbert encouraged anyone interested in supporting the initiative to contact the organization via phone or email.
“This is truly a community effort,” he said. “The support we receive allows us to keep spreading joy and making a difference for local families.”
