Owensboro and Nashville resident Sherrie Harris was recently awarded Nashville Humane Association’s annual Julia Colton Award for Excellence in Animal Welfare. This prestigious award is presently annually to someone who has significantly contributed to the welfare of animals in Middle Tennessee. Presented in honor of Julia Colton, former Nashville Humane board member, president, fundraising chair and volunteer who devoted her life to aiding and assisting homeless and at-risk animals. She was an inspiration to everyone she met and a true hero to the animals and this award is presented to someone who carries on this tradition. The presentation kicked off Cause for Paws, an appreciation and fundraising champagne luncheon at Belle Meade Country Club in Nashville featuring a silent auction, pop up designer jewelry, trunk show and runway fashion show featuring designer L’AGENCE.
This sold out event featured adoptable dogs and showcased accomplishments of Nashville Humane recognizing the importance of financial support to run this shelter that helps over 4,000 furry friends find their forever homes each year. The funds also help provide enrichment, outreach programs, healthcare and spay/neuter to the animals at the shelter and in the metro Nashville area.
Although Harris (a KY native) splits time between both Nashville and Owensboro she finds time to volunteer in both cities currently focusing on animal related private nonprofit organizations. With a history of serving on national boards for music for children in public schools, national boards for LGBTQ, local KY boards for CASA of Ohio Valley and most recently as a founding member and board member of AWPAW (Advocates Working for Pet and Animal Welfare, AWPAW.org a 501C3) Harris focuses on reaching out to find creative solutions to partner not just locally but with organizations who help each other with similar but different focus and across the country. AWPAW was recently formed to push progressive services that other shelters in cities of similar or larger populations already provide with community involvement and support and will be hard launching in 2025. AWPAW was formed to fill the voids currently existing in Daviess and ultimately surrounding counties in animal care assisting other nonprofits for people and pets who need resources.
