Dorothy M. Cates, 95, of Owensboro, passed away Monday, November 25, 2024 while under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. She was born in Evansville, Indiana on May 3, 1929 to the late Roy Nicholson and Mae Southwood Nicholson. Dorothy worked as a cosmetologist, was a secretary at Mead Johnson, owned and operated The Bridal House and Newman’s Formal Wear for over 30 years, and was an Adult Literacy Program tutor. She was a much loved homebody. Dorothy loved spending time with her family and cooking for them. She enjoyed fishing, dancing, playing bridge, cooking, and UK basketball.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Cates Sr.; granddaughter, Andrea Stephen; son-in-law, Spencer Stephen; and a sister, Mary K. Marbach.
She is survived by a daughter, Karen Stephen Pollard (Larry); granddaughter, Kristen McCabe (Patrick); grandson, Corey Stephen; four great-grandchildren, Adam, Sydney, Will, and Megan McCabe; half-brother, Wayne Nicholson; and a half-sister, Cindy McDuffie.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, December 2, 2024 at James H. Davis Funeral Home and Crematory. Entombment will follow in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation is from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
