The Theatre Workshop of Owensboro is putting its own twist on the classic story of Cinderella this weekend with the youth production of “Twinderella.”
The story opens at 7 p.m. tonight, with performances also set for 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday — all at TWO’s Empress Theatre at 418 Frederica Street. Tickets are $20 and are available by calling TWO’s box office at 270-683-5333 between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, or by visiting theatreworkshop.org.
Srimayi Galla, assistant director of “Twinderalla,” said this production is a funny take on the age-old fairy tale. In this story, Cinderella has a twin brother named Bob, who has an evil stepfather and stepbrothers.
“This funny take-off on the beloved fairy tale finds Cinderella and her long-lost twin brother on a quest to get themselves invited to The Royal Ball. With the aid of their Fairy Godmother and, of course, the Godfather, the pair are literally a hit when Cinderella smacks a home run in the All-Kingdom baseball game,” a description of the play reads.
Galla said this year’s cast and crew includes more than 30 youth.
“This gives the kids a great opportunity to come together and just create art,” she said. “They really learn and grow from this, and it’s just a community that really brings them together.”
Sam Wilkerson said that she really enjoys the fact that people can have fun with a newer version of a very classic tale, but also take away from it that you can do anything with fairy tales.
Assistant Stage Manager Ethan Wimsatt said he’s enjoyed seeing how much the cast has improved through this experience.
“At the beginning of this there were a lot of new kids who haven’t performed before, and just watching them grow and step out of their comfort zone and step out of that shell is great,” he said. “They’ve definitely improved, and they’ve worked very hard to put on this show and to make it the best show that they can make it.”
Cast member Mason Winders added “If you like fairy tales and Cinderella, you’re going to love this play; it’s a very cool play.”
