Tuesday’s City-Country track meet was the first real matchup for all the teams in Daviess County, and the Apollo boys took first place by 11 points while Daviess County girls won by 12 points.
Rounding out the boys’ standings were Owensboro, Owensboro Catholic and Daviess County, while the DC girls beat out Owensboro Catholic, Apollo and Owensboro, respectively.
Both the Apollo boys and Daviess County girls teams won three of the four relay races, results that each team’s coaches said helped them pull away with the overall win.
Apollo head coach Charlie Shoulta said dominating the relays bodes well for team success. He added that on paper, he actually had the team finishing a close second to Owensboro.
“The win today wasn’t quite a shock,” he said. “We’re really excited. I told the team yesterday if we were going to pull the upset it wasn’t about the guys that were supposed to finish first. It was about the guys who were supposed to finish fourth and fifth. We needed those guys to step up and honestly that’s how we got the win today. While our top guys did their jobs and finished high in their races, that’s how we got the W.”
The Eagles had first-place finishes in six races and one field event.
For the Lady Panthers, head coach Mark Fortney similarly said the win was a great team effort.
“That’s what you have to have (to win) — you have to score in every event,” he said. “We had several go 1-2 on the distance side and in the field event people stepped up big. We scored in every event except for the pole vault and we don’t have a pole vaulter. When you score in 17 events you’re going to have a good team score.”
Fortney said Alayna Petri winning the long jump and having two girls score in the triple jump helped with points on the field side. Kyra Rowan scored in four events for the Panthers, which Fortney said was big for the team.
