The Veterans Resource Fair, an annual event that provides vital services and resources to veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their families, will return on October 3. It will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at the National Guard Armory at 3300 Tamarack Road.
Heather Yeiser, director of employment services with Audubon Area Community Services (AACS), is excited to see the fair return and notes its importance to the local veteran community.
“This is an annual fair that we do, but we had to pause during the pandemic,” Yeiser said. “It’s for all veterans, active duty, National Guard, Coast Guard, and their families. There’s no charge to attend, and there are so many helpful resources available.”
The fair offers door prizes and refreshments, but the highlight, Yeiser explained, is the wide array of vendors focused on veterans’ needs. Representatives from the VA, the American Legion, health clinics, gyms, and more will be on-site to offer guidance, answer questions, and provide resources to military personnel and their families.
“We have organizations that can help with everything from benefits enrollment to remodeling homes for veterans with specific needs,” Yeiser said. “Medical clinics will be there, and gyms too, just to provide support in any way they can.”
The fair also provides a unique opportunity for veterans to connect with one another.
“Veterans understand each other in a way the rest of us can’t,” Yeiser said. “They enjoy coming together, sharing stories, and supporting one another. It’s a special bond.”
The Veterans Resource Fair is organized by the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), a group that pairs seniors over 55 with nonprofits for volunteer opportunities. Many of the volunteers involved with the fair are veterans themselves, creating a sense of camaraderie and community among participants.
“It’s really the community that keeps this event going,” Yeiser said. “The vendors donate their time, businesses donate food and gift cards, and the National Guard Armory has been a huge supporter. It’s amazing to see everyone come out and support our veterans.”
Veterans and military families interested in attending are encouraged to simply show up – no reservations are required. Along with vendors, Yeiser said attendees will have the opportunity to register for door prizes and enjoy complimentary refreshments.
