The Roller Derby is coming to Owensboro this weekend, offering fans a chance to witness high-energy action at the Convention Center.
Vette City Roller Derby, a women’s flat-track roller derby league based in Bowling Green, will host its “Almost Home” competition on September 28. This marks the first time since 2020 that the league will host a quadruple-header competition.
The day kicks off with two junior roller derby bouts at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., followed by two adult matches at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
General admission tickets are $12 (good for all day) and will be sold at the door. Children 10 and under will be admitted free.
Vette City Roller Derby and Vette City Junior Roller Derby have competed across the country this season, with stops in Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Tuscaloosa, and Evansville.
Roller derby is a contact sport played on an oval track. It features two teams of five skaters, and the game is played in timed jams lasting two minutes each. With 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide, the sport has maintained popularity in the United States.
Teresa Jones, destination sales executive at the Owensboro Convention Center, expressed excitement about the event.
“The Convention Center is actively seeking new sports as well as the CVB, and we are excited to have this group in,” Jones said. “Be sure to head over to Mellow Mushroom Saturday night at 9:30 for a meet and greet after party.”
Organizers said the roller derby will offer fans a unique and thrilling experience.
