Albert King and his fiancée Ashley Smith own and operate Pub House, a small neighborhood bar on 9th Street in Owensboro. There, they’ve created a space filled with charm, nostalgia, and a growing sense of community.
“We might be the smallest bar in town, with just 35 seats, but that’s what makes us special,” King said. “We’re not trying to be a party bar. It’s a place where people can come and actually talk, have fun with friends, or even enjoy a casual first date.”
Since opening in March 2020, just days before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down businesses across the country, Pub House has faced its share of challenges.
“We opened on a Friday and got one full week before we had to close,” King said. “But we kept pushing forward, and our customers, many of whom I’ve known for years, helped keep us going.”
King, who has been bartending for 15 years, also draws inspiration from his family. His grandmother and great-grandmother opened Martin’s Bar in Owensboro in 1935.
“I’ve always been in this business, and I’ve always known people, so when we opened back up, our regulars came back. They’re still the best part of this place.”
Pub House offers more than just drinks. With a covered patio and a variety of entertainment options such as pool tables and free arcade games ranging from Pac-Man to NBA Jam, it’s a spot where customers can relax and enjoy themselves.
“We’ve got a really diverse crowd, and everyone is friendly,” King said. “It’s not about partying. It’s about enjoying good company and great conversation.”
He said the bar has been steadily growing in popularity, with more people adding it to their Owensboro bar-hopping lists.
One of Pub House’s unique features is its recent collaboration with Crashaunya Hartsfield, owner of Hart and Soul Beverages, who provides fresh juices for mocktails and cocktails.
Smith, who manages the bar alongside King, met Hartsfield at the local Farmers’ Market and quickly became a fan of her juices.
“We started with just one gallon to see how it would go, and now we’re ordering three gallons a week,” Smith said. “The juices are delicious on their own, but you can also mix them with just about anything – rum, vodka, you name it.”
They also plan to introduce a Bloody Mary bar in October, featuring a custom mix from Hart and Soul.
“It’s been great to work with Crashaunya,” Smith said. “Her juices not only taste amazing, but they also make you feel good, like you’re drinking something healthy – even if you’re mixing it with your favorite spirit.”
Despite being small, Pub House has a loyal customer base and a dedicated staff.
“Every bartender we have now has been with us since we opened,” Smith said. “It’s the people who make this place what it is.”
Pub House is open Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m., and Saturdays from noon to 2 a.m.
“We put a lot of love and time into this little spot,” Smith added. “And we’ve got plenty of love to share.”
