Apollo held tough for a quarter and a half, but reigning 5A champion Bowling Green proved to be too much as the Purples pulled away for a 49-14 victory Friday night.
The Eagles (2-2) struck first when Max Johnson connected with Niles Board for a 57-yard touchdown on their opening drive.
Bowling Green (3-1) quickly responded, marching 70 yards for a touchdown to knot the game at 7-7 with 8:06 left in the first quarter.
The teams traded interceptions late in the first quarter and remained tied for much of the second. That’s when the Purples started to pull away.
Bowling Green went in front with a touchdown with 5:57 to play in the half, then added another score with 1:54 on the clock. They scored again as time expired for a 28-7 lead at the break.
The Purples added a touchdown 24 seconds into the third quarter and scored for the final time later in the third.
As the third quarter came to a close, Apollo’s Johnson found John Milburn to cut the deficit to 49-14. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
