Owensboro Catholic edged out Owensboro in a five-match thriller and Trinity held off Grayson County, while McLean County fell to Heritage Christian.
Owensboro Catholic 3, Owensboro 2
Olivia Castlen led both teams with 24 kills and added 23 digs, two service aces, and a block as the Lady Aces outlasted Owensboro 3-2 (23-25, 26-24, 28-26, 23-25, 15-13) in a thrilling five-set match. Mayme Powell led Owensboro Catholic in assists and service aces with 21 and seven, respectively, while Andi Davis posted a team-high 30 digs.
“Both teams played very hard and the match could have gone either way,” Owensboro Catholic head coach Brian Hardison said. “Olivia Castlen has been playing solid volleyball, but our entire team has. That win makes us 5-1 and 3-0 in district play.”
For the Lady Devils, Addie Travis finished with a team-high 22 digs and also added 13 digs, three assists, two blocks, and two service aces. Macey Kahn recorded 22 digs, Anna Travis had 26 assists and five service aces, and Rose Larsen added 11 kills and 21 digs.
“We came out strong and with lots of energy,” Owensboro head coach Melissa Hibbs said. “I thought our front line did a great job at the net, but not executing on serve receive was too costly.”
Trinity 3, Grayson County 2
Despite a plethora of errors, the Lady Raiders held their emotions in check and found a way to prevail 3-2 over Grayson County. Addison Mills led Trinity in kills with 19.
“Tonight was a prime example of how your crowd can influence and add momentum, what it means to dig deep, and how the ‘little’ errors add up,” Trinity head coach Brooke Hall said. “We were off our game tonight, which is to be expected because no one plays a perfect game, but Grayson County knew it and took advantage just as every team would. We were able to pull through with the help of an active crowd and student section as well as the help of senior leadership. Addison has been behind the scenes, so it’s nice to see her step into the light and show everyone what she is capable of given the opportunity. The real win to me tonight was seeing our girls lay down the past and push through mental blocks/overcoming personal challenges.”
Heritage Christian 3, McLean County 0
Rachel Roberts finished with eight kills, eight digs, and a block in the Lady Cougars 3-0 loss to Heritage Christian. Addy Kirby added 13 assists, five kills, and one service ace, while Rachel Ring recorded two blocks and a kill.
“The girls played really well tonight,” McLean County head coach Traci Capps said. “We still can’t seem to finish it, but they’re making the right decisions on the court.”
