Owensboro Catholic recorded a shutout, while Apollo and Owensboro split in their doubleheaders.

Greenwood 6, Apollo 0. Apollo 3, Hopkinsville 0

After being shut out by Greenwood, Omid Hanafi, M’Munga Juma, and Colton Anderson all scored to help the Eagles beat Hopkinsville 3-0 in their doubleheader.

“A lot of things happened against Greenwood,” said Apollo head coach Nikos Agisialou. “Credit to Greenwood for making us pay for our mistakes. We had plenty of chances to put the ball in the net and take advantage of opportunities. “

Owensboro 8, Marion County 0. Owensboro 1, Webster County 1

In their first game of the doubleheader, Ryan Sovar and Peter Mbayo both scored hat tricks in the Red Devils 8-0 shutout win over Marion County. Denis Juma and Broderick Divine rounded out the team’s scoring, while Brian Payne recorded two assists. Sovar, Emile Banza, and Miles Morrison also all added assists.

“We came into this game ready to face a team we knew little about other than their record (6-1), with their single loss being to Etown (2-3),” Owensboro head coach Ryan Haley said. “Looking at that, we knew they were going to be good. We played dialed in from the whistle. The midfield won the 50/50s, the defense did not give up any shot, we kept the sheet clean, and we attacked with purpose. It was our best collective effort this year.”

Brian Payne scored the Red Devils lone goal in the second game of the doubleheader, while Landon Black recorded two saves in their 1-1 draw against Webster County.

“We couldn’t find the back of the net,” Haley said. “We had 31 shots to 3. They played a low block, basically having a back line of five and sometimes six with three in front. They were able to score off a free kick, one of the few times they had the ball in our half. We need to finish our chances.”

Owensboro Catholic 3, Evansville Day School 0

Owen Brey, Bart Phen, and JW Kurtz scored in the Ace’s 3-0 shutout win against Evansville Day School. Brey also added two assists while Joseph Kurtz had the other, and goalie Max Dawson recorded one save. The Aces finished with 21 shots, 12 of them on goal, while only allowing one shot on goal.

“It was a good team performance, particularly in the second half,” Owensboro Catholic head coach Andy Donohoe said. There was a better focus on being patient on the ball in the final third, and it paid off. A clean sheet is always positive for the players.
