Cameron Bell scored five goals to help Daviess County shut out Owensboro Catholic, while Owensboro blanked Apollo in 9th District boys’ soccer action on Thursday.
Owensboro 6, Apollo 0
Ryan Sovar and Byaruhanga Mutabazi each scored twice while goalie Landon Black recorded three saves in the Red Devils’ 6-0 shutout win over Apollo. Brian Payne and Peter Mbayu rounded out the team’s scoring. Owensboro had 20 shots on goal to Apollo’s four.
“Kids are funny, sometimes they come to play and sometimes they don’t,” OHS head coach Ryan Haley said. “Today in the first half we didn’t put our best foot forward and I think our guys thought it was going to be easy. At halftime I told the boys, sometimes on some days, the other team is just better. This didn’t sit well with them and I think it made them mad that I thought they were being outplayed. I can personally say I liked our second half much better than the first, but you gotta give credit to Apollo for a hard-fought first half.”
Daviess County 8, Owensboro Catholic 0
Cameron Bell scored five goals and added an assist while Carter Payne scored and recorded two assists in the Panther’s 8-0 shutout home win against Owensboro Catholic. Defensively, Daviess County didn’t allow a shot on goal. For the Aces, goalie Ben Dawson finished with 12 saves.
“The team played well from start to finish,” Daviess County head coach David Sandifer said. “Cam Bell had a good night on the scoring end but several players helped out with nice assists to get him good looks on goal. Our midfield played well and the back line did a nice job. Overall, it was a nice game for us against a stingy Catholic team.”
