The Hancock County Hornets displayed a dominant performance on the road, defeating the Breckinridge County Tigers 62-7 Friday night.
The Hornets took control early, with senior Wyatt Emmick scoring two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. Junior Chris Gillispie and senior quarterback Dylan Morris each added a rushing touchdown, giving Hancock County a commanding 28-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Freshman Uziel Munguia was perfect on extra points, converting all four attempts.
Hancock continued its offensive onslaught into the second quarter. Morris scored again, extending the lead to 34-0 with 8:18 left in the half.
Although Breckinridge managed to find the end zone with a passing touchdown, Hancock responded swiftly. Morris added another rushing touchdown, and an interception by senior Carson Clark set up a touchdown pass from Morris to junior Kalab Helms.
Entering the game, head coach Bobby Eubanks said he wanted his Hornets to finish four quarters of football, reflecting on a stagnant second half last week.
“Our kids played well tonight, and I’m pleased with their overall effort,” Eubanks said. “We did a good job limiting their quarterback, who came in rushing the ball well.”
His squad kept the accelerator pressed, adding two more touchdowns in the second half to come out on top 62-7. He attributed a lot of the team’s success to special teams.
“We had two punt blocks and recovered fumbles, but we need to focus on ball security as we move forward,” he said. “We’re improving with penalties, but there’s always room to clean that up.”
With the win, the Hornets move to 2-0 and continue to build momentum as they host Ohio County at home next week.
