During the state tournament, the Owensboro Southern 10U Little League squad found itself on the losing end of a close battle against Marion County. At the same time, Daviess County’s 11U team routed Nelson County 18-0.
Marion County jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over Southern in the first inning. The All-Stars responded with two runs in the second and one in the third to tie things up 3-3. After a scoreless fourth, Marion County was able to muster up one final run in the fifth inning for the eventual 4-3 win.
Levi Marks led the squad at the plate with two hits, followed by Aaron Higdon, Corbin Sims, John Blair, Eli Murphy, and Nathan Vanover, who each had one. Vanover also had a game-high two RBIs.
Despite a solid performance, Elijah Wallace lost on the mound, allowing just four runs (three earned) on four hits in 5 innings of work.
Southern returns to action against North Oldham tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
Daviess County made a splash today with a 7-2 win over the homesteading Corbin All-Stars and 18-0 over Nelson County.
It was also Daviess County against Nelson County, as the team moved to 5-1 on the year and 3-0 at state. The All-Stars scored 10 runs in the first, followed by eight in the second to seal the deal after just 2.5 innings.
The All-Star team epitomized its name, with 10 players earning a mark in the run column.
Justin Maxey and Jake Watkins each secured a game-high three RBIs, while Watkins and J.P. Hedges recorded double-digit hits. Bryar Stone had the game’s only double.
Luke Abbott pitched a perfect game on the mound, tallying four Ks and the win in just two innings of work. Stone entered for one inning in relief, striking out all three batters.
Daviess County returns to action on Tuesday at 5 p.m. against Russell County.
