Think you’re good at cornhole because you can win at your backyard barbecue? You can see how your skills stack up to the pros by watching the American Cornhole Organization world championships in Owensboro this week. The event is free to attend at the Owensboro Convention Center.
The event began last week with the Amateur Athletic Union Junior World Championships of Cornhole, comprising co-ed age divisions for 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U, and 18U.
“AAU has got kids all over the country. It’s not just kids-oriented, but it’s primarily kids involved with it, and the youth is the next and current generation of cornhole players,” said ACO President Frank Greers.
The 5-day ACO world championships tournament begins today with qualifiers and runs through Saturday. There will be championship matches each night starting on Wednesday.
“It’s one of those things that people don’t realize how fun and cool it is until you get there. You get to hang out for a few hours with us and watch some of the best men and women players on the planet the game of cornhole compete,” Greers said.
The tournament moved to Owensboro in 2022 when, with Greers said it’s only gotten better each year since.
“We have enjoyed every minute that the ACO has been in Owensboro, and it’s just a great community,” he said. “It’s a riverfront community with a lot of good restaurants, bars, and things to do there in town, and the convention center is absolutely gorgeous, and the people that we work with in the community are outstanding as well.”
