SparKy Rescue has seen pet adoption rates slow down locally and nationally. To help their rescues find new homes, the local chapter is starting the Foster-to-Adopt Program.

Volunteer Kristi Harrison said that some of their pets have been staying at the shelter for long periods due to declining adoption rates. Yet, they are still seeing foster parenting continue locally.

The Foster-to-Adopt program meets families in the middle between the two intakes. With Foster-to-Adopt, families learn if one of SparKy’s cats or dogs is the right fit for their family through a predetermined hosting period. By the time the fostering ends, SparKy will revisit and see if the family wants to adopt.

“This option will allow responsible pet owners considering adoption to have a trial run in the comfort of their own homes so everyone can feel confident about the commitment,” Harrison said.

Harrison said that through the program, the animal will be able to get acquainted with the host’s home, which will enable a deeper understanding of whether the animal is right for the family.

SparKy also notes that the program will be free until the adoption is decided. SparKy will provide any and all medical care.

The program is only available to those within an hour’s radius of Owensboro.

The organization’s rescue shelter at 1004 East 18th Street is open for visitors wanting to meet any of the available pets. To see the available pets, click here.

To adopt with SparKy, applicants must be 21 years or older, have proof of address and be able to cover financial responsibilities after adoption. Anyone interested in fostering, adopting or enrolling in this program can click here to apply.
