Avery M. McDonald, Jr, 78, of Owensboro died Friday, June 28, 2024 while under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. He was born on November 23, 1945 to the late Avery McDonald, Sr. and Stella Dorris McDonald.

Avery was a 1964 graduate of Owensboro High School. He followed that by proudly serving in the United States Navy. After his honorable discharge, Avery worked at G.E. then attended Eastern Kentucky University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Law Enforcement. Avery then was honored to serve the Commonwealth as a Kentucky State Trooper, retiring as a Lieutenant after twenty-five years of service.

Avery was a patriot who loved his country. He was a husband and father who loved his family. He loved spending time at his country cabin soaking in the solitude and beauty of the nature God created. He enjoyed very much having a coffee, chatting, laughing, and spending time with friends. He was a man that had many friends.

Avery was a dedicated man of God. He loved the Lord with all his heart and enjoyed being a part of God’s Kingdom. He was a trustee at Christ Redeemer Church where he had attended for the last several years. Though he will most certainly be missed by all who knew him, Avery lived in the Grace of the Almighty and was ready when the Lord took him home!

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Bobby McDonald, Norman McDonald, and Carlos McDonald.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Judy Howard McDonald; children, Chris (Sandra) McDonald, Mark (Julie) McDonald, and Dana McDonald Bernard; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jane (Danny) Payne; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11:00am on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial will follow at Owensboro Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 3:00pm to 7:00pm and on Wednesday from 9:00am to 11:00am at James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory.
