The Owensboro Southern 10U Little League team showed their mettle by defeating Warren County South 12-6 on Wednesday. With 15 hits, they have secured a spot in the state tournament in Corbin on July 19.
Corbin Sims led all hitters with four RBIs and three hits on a double and two singles. Benjamin Marks earned the win on the mound, allowing only two hits and two runs (zero earned) in three and a third innings.
“It’s been a whirlwind – we’ve played four out of the last five days,” head coach Brandon Brooks said. “I’m really proud of this team. Every kid contributed. Southern Little League is a community – it’s very close-knit. Seeing kids come from different schools and different teams and form this bond over the last few weeks has been amazing.”
The Southern All-Stars jumped on the board first with two quick runs in the first inning, followed by six in the second to amass an 8-3 lead. Levi Marks added an RBI single in the third to extend the lead to 9-3.
Nathan Vanover added three hits, while Haddon Brooks and Aaron Higdon each had two.
“It was great seeing the kids excited for each other and picking each other up,” Brooks said. “Our pitchers competed and threw strikes, and we came up with some big defensive plays. It was a complete 180 from our first game of the tournament.”
Southern lost 16-3 to Warren County South in the first round of pool play before winning four straight to claim the title. They defeated Muhlenberg County 15-0, followed by Bowling Green East 5-3 in the semifinals, and then South in the championship.
