Donn K. Wimmer

Donn K. Wimmer passed away at the age of 89 on June 24, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was born on April 18, 1935 in Washington D.C. to Paul and Bernice Wimmer. He was a devoted husband and father as well as being devoted to his community and The Hancock Clarion, as he was the paper’s editor for the past 65 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Bernice Wimmer, his brother Richard “Dick” Wimmer, his daughter Suzanne Wimmer and his wife of 71 years, Juanita Wimmer.

Donn was passionate about all his interests, which were many. He ran the Clarion as it’s editor and photographer for most of his life. He later became the Clarion’s owner and publisher and maintained that title for more than 50 years until his death. He was a pilot for more than 50 years and a renowned aerial and wedding photographer.

Donn and his wife, Juanita, made their home in Hawesville from the time of their marriage in 1951.

Donn played an integral role in the building of the Hancock County Airport “Ron Lewis Field”. He also played a role in many local organizations including the Hancock County Industrial Foundation.

A former Hancock County Citizen of the Year, Donn was committed to his community and to helping the county grow. He was a supporter of the Hancock County Historical Society, Hancock County Museum and a past member of the Hawesville Lions Club and Jaycees.

He loved to play golf with his friends and his son. He was always proud of being a charter member of Windward Heights Country Club and he supported the club in many ways.

He was a decorated flyer and was named ‘Pilot of the Year’ by the National Race Pilots of America in 1985.

Donn’s photography has been viewed by thousands through the Clarion and from his many aerials. His work still hangs throughout the county in various places, including the Hancock County Judicial Center, Hancock County High School and at local industries.

Donn was a member of Hawesville Baptist Church and his faith in God was always strong.

He is survived by his sister, Patricia Engle, daughters Linda Dillon and Jennifer Wimmer, and son Steve Wimmer. His granddaughters Kristina Gravett, Ashley d’Oliveira, Cedar, Jiah David and Arwen, as well as four great grandchildren, nieces Lori Marsh, Debbie Wimmer and Gay Holder, and nephews David Holder, Rick Holder, Mark Wimmer and Jeff Wimmer, as well as many cousins.

Arrangements and burial will be handled by Gibson & Son Funeral Home. Visitation will be Thursday from 3:30pm to 7pm and Friday morning from 9am to 11am at Hawesville Baptist Church.
