When Daviess County Clerk Leslie McCarty took office in January, she set a goal to give back to the community through her new position. McCarty said she believes it is important to use her office to serve those less fortunate, something she was passionate about in her previous position at the library.
For the month of March, McCarty decided to focus efforts on two local schools, Estes and Foust Elementary. Taking to Facebook, McCarty posted her “Two Schools, Two Needs, Two Drives and You” campaign.
The post asked for copy paper for Estes Elementary, who uses a lot of paper photocopying for educational texts for students. And for Foust, the drive focused on new and used clothing items for their clothing closet.
The social media post worked, McCarty said. Employees from Domtar saw the post and donated 22 boxes of paper and McCarty said they were able to collect several totes of clothing for Foust.
“I wish we could have done even more,” McCarty said. “For those of us who work at the courthouse, we are blessed to have our jobs. It is important to stay humble and give back to those less fortunate.”
McCarty said she plans to switch up the organization or school that will receive the clerk’s office donation drive items, with the goal of changing every month or two.
“If there’s a need out there we’re not aware of, we are open for suggestions,” she said
Although McCarty said it makes her happy to give, she also hopes that these donation drives bring people into the courthouse for more than just their vehicle plate renewals and title transfers.
“The courthouse used to be a hub, and I would like to bring that back,” McCarty said.
