Update: May 31, 2024 – 3:47 p.m. –Take a Kid Fishing is canceled this weekend due to forecasted inclement weather.
Director of Parks and Public Information Jordan Rowe said the decision was made by the Kids Outdoor Adventures committee.
“If the weather clears, families are welcome to fish at Panther Creek Park on Saturday or Sunday (June 1-2). No license or permit is required, as part of the Free Fishing Weekend across Kentucky. Approximately 1,200 large bluegill were added to the lake on Thursday, May 30. Save the date for the next event, “Take A Kid Outdoors,” on September 7 at the Mattingly Target Shooting Range in Maceo,” Rowe said.

Original Story: Looking for a way to get outside with the kids? Free Fishing Weekend returns statewide this June 1-2, when you don’t need a license or permit to fish in Kentucky. In Daviess County, Take a Kid Fishing Day will be hosted on Satuday at Panther Creek Park.
The local event is put on by the Daviess County Conservation District as part of their Kids Outdoor Adventures series that takes place throughout the year.
The annual Take a Kid Fishing event has continued to grow each year, according to Secretary Georgia McCrady.
“We have been able to get more and more kids outside. A lot of these kids do not usually have the chance to go fishing. When they catch their first one, their faces just light up. It is such a fun event to work at and to see these kids having fun and becoming interested in fishing and the outdoors,” McCrady said.
McCrady said they ask participants to pre-register by calling 270-685-1707 ext. 3. Same-day registration will start at 8 a.m. Attendees are asked to bring their fishing poles, though a limited number will be provided for those who need them.
Fishing will begin at 9 a.m., door prizes will be given, and lunch will be served at 11 a.m. Guests will fish around the Feather Landing Shelter at Panther Creek Park.
Later this year, the Conservation District will host Take a Kid Outdoors and Take a Kid Camping on September 7 and October 18, respectively.
