Donald Gene Calloway, 92, of Owensboro passed away Monday, May 20, 2024 while under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. He was born May 26, 1931 in Centertown to the late Thomas Walter Calloway and Bertha Jane Coppage Calloway. Don retired from UMWA Peabody Coal Company and was an U.S. Army Korean War veteran. He was an advisor to the Secretary of the Interior Department for five years and was chairman of UMWA Safety Committee for 20 years. Don was a former member and deacon of Sugar Grove Baptist Church for 48 years where he also taught Sunday School for 22 years. He was been a member of Harvest Baptist Temple for 15 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Ed Calloway, Paul Calloway, Porter Calloway, Landon Calloway, Lucille Cooper, Marvadean Ralph and Carolyn Farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Ballard Calloway; two sons, Mike (Ada) Calloway and Mark (Missy) Calloway; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Shirley Holbrook.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024 at Harvest Baptist Temple. Burial will follow in Sugar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at James H. Davis Funeral Home and Crematory and from 11 a.m. until time of service on Friday at the church.
