Baseball recap (May 16): AHS, DCHS, OHS, OCHS, THS

Apollo, Owensboro and Trinity all wrapped up their regular seasons, while Catholic and Daviess County both have one more game lined up. Apollo, Daviess County, Owensboro and Owensboro Catholic all picked up wins while Trinity was defeated.

AHS 8, Breckinridge Co. 0

Apollo hosted Breckinridge County at home, and they secured a big 8-0 win to close out their regular season. The Eagles finished the regular season with an impressive record of 21-7.

The game was slow to start as the first two innings went scoreless, but Apollo jumped out ahead with 4 runs in the third. They added 4 more runs to their lead in the fifth inning and held off Breckinridge in the sixth and seventh to complete the 8-0 shutout. 

On the mound for the Eagles was Grayson Smith who had 3 strikeouts and allowed 2 hits across 2 innings, Garrett Lanham who had 3 strikeouts and allowed 3 hits across 3 innings, Ross Milburn who had a strikeout and allowed a hit in one inning and Noah Cook who had 1 strikeout in the final inning. At the plate, Ty Lillpop had 2 RBIs, Brock Burger had an RBI and 2 runs scored and Sam Holder and Will Strode both had an RBI and scored 1 run each as well. Easton Blandford and Millburn both had 1 RBI, and Lane Skinner and Lanham both scored 1 run each. 

DCHS 11, Butler Co. 1

Daviess County played their second-to-last on the road against Butler County where they had no trouble pulling off a big 11-1 win.

Daviess County gained an early foothold after they scored 3 runs across the first two innings. They had a big 5-run performance in the top of the third before Butler scored their sole run in the bottom of the inning. The Panthers put the game to bed with 3 more runs in the fourth before holding Butler scoreless in the fifth to close out the game 11-1.  

On the mound for the Panthers was Weston Lawrence who had 3 strikeouts and allowed 1 hit across 2 innings, Brett Poole who had 2 strikeouts and allowed 3 hits across 1 inning and Cameron Rickard who recorded 1 strikeout across 2 innings. Toby Morris had 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored, and Lucas Ward had 2 RBIs as well. Noah Ranburger and Rickard both hit a double, had 1 RBI and 3 hits, and Rickard scored 3 runs while Ranburger scored 2. Poole had 1 RBI and scored 1 run, and Carter Nichols and Sean Page both had 1 RBI as well. Gage Hagan, Brody Brubaker and Gavin Howard all scored 1 run each. 

OHS 9, Grayson Co. 6

Owensboro closed out their regular season with a battle on the road against Grayson County. The Red Devils took the win 9-6, and their regular season record finished at 16-10. 

Grayson opened the scoring with 2 runs in the top of the first but OHS wasn’t far behind as they got on the board with 1 run in the bottom of the inning. After a scoreless second, the Red Devils took the lead with a 5-run performance in the third inning to put the score at 6-2. Grayson scored 1 in the fifth before OHS seemingly put the game away in the sixth with 3 more runs. However, Grayson made a final push in the final inning with 3 runs, but Owensboro shut them down to secure the 9-6 win. 

On the mound for the Red Devils was Cayden Ray who had 3 strikeouts and allowed 2 runs across 2 innings, Kaleb Ashley who had 2 strikeouts across innings, Will Rickard who allowed 2 hits across 1 inning, and Will Hume who had 1 strikeout and allowed 3 hits across 2 innings. At the plate, Ty Ashley had 2 RBIs and scored 2 runs, and Blake Kimbrell and Brady Benjamin both had 2 RBIs and 1 scored run. Evan Hampton had 1 RBI and scored 3 runs, Lake Wilson had 1 RBI, 3 hits and 1 run scored, and Rickard had 1 RBI as well.

OCHS 2, Bowling Green 0

Owensboro Catholic battled it out with Bowling Green at home in a close game that saw OC come out on top with the 2-0 win. 

It was a game of defense as the first four innings saw neither team gain the lead. Luke Quinn was on the mound for OC in the first three innings to help keep the score stagnant, and Barrett Evans stepped on in the fourth inning. The Aces broke through in the fifth inning and scored 2 runs to take the lead. Evans recorded 2 strikeouts in his 4 innings on the mound to help close out the 2-0 win. Evans also had an RBI at the plate, and Houston Flynn and Jaxson White scored the two runs for the team. 

Hart Co. 10, THS 0

For their last game of the regular season Trinity took to the road and faced off against Hart County. They suffered a tough 10-0 and finished the season with a record of 3-18. 

The first inning saw neither team take an advantage, but Hart jumped ahead in the second with 4 runs. Brady McBrayer was on the mound for 5 innings and allowed 5 hits overall, but he helped keep Hart scoreless for the 3 innings. However, THS struggled to come back on offense, and Hart closed out the game in the sixth with 6 more runs for a 10-0 final score. 

Rylan Cecil also pitched for 0.1 innings and had 1 strikeout while allowing 4 hits, and Nate Blue pitched for 0.1 innings and allowed 2 hits. McBrayer, Hayden Aull and Harrison Barnett all had 1 hit each.
