
Mike ‘Chops’ West 69, of Calhoun, Kentucky passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at his home. Michael Lynn West was born January 27, 1955 in Madisonville, Kentucky to the late Clyde Eugene and Martha Jane Mitchell West and was married to the former Sherry Lynn Pate. Mike was known as ‘Chops’ by his friends since high school and by those he worked alongside. Mike was the cherished fifth child and only son of his parents. His life was marked by his unwavering kindness, his strong work ethic, and his profound sense of community.
Mike was known for his strong hands and stronger heart, having dedicated many years as a skilled Ironworker. His commitment to craftsmanship was only matched by his loyalty to his fellow workers, reflected in his longstanding membership with the local union. Colleagues knew they could rely on Mike for support and camaraderie both on and off the job site.
A man of faith, Mike was a member of Sacramento Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he found strength and solace in community worship. His faith was a guiding force from his youth, when he felt a calling to serve on the mission field with the Indian Reservations, inspired by his pastor, the Rev. John Lovelace. Although his plans to enter the mission field did not come to fruition, the experience left an indelible mark on his character, nurturing a lifelong inclination towards helping others.
Mike’s interests painted a portrait of a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. During the winter months, he could often be found cheering on his beloved University of Kentucky Wildcats in their basketball games, a testament to his enduring passion and state pride. He treasured the tranquility of country living near Calhoun, where he found peace and contentment in the country landscapes that he called home.
Even when he had little for himself, Mike gave selflessly to those around him, a testament to his compassionate nature. He was a man who found value in every relationship, making friends with ease and leaving a lasting impact on all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
As the beloved son after four daughters, Mike was adored by his parents, who saw in him a gentle strength and a caring heart. His legacy is one of love, hard work, and a commitment to the well-being of his family and community. Mike’s memory will be carried forward in the stories told and the lives he touched.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Sherry West, who died September 6, 2010; by a step daughter, Mandy Hardy; and by three sisters, Barbara Wiggins, Janice Downs, and Ada McDowell.
Mike is survived by his companion, Joy Thomas; two step daughters, Lindsey West and Jennifer Hardy; a step grandson, Kylar West (Laurissa); a step great grandson, Drake West; a sister, Norma Everly (Doug); several cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, May 11, 2024 at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel. Burial will be in the Sacramento Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery in Sacramento. Friends may visit with Mike’s family from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. Saturday at Musters in Livermore.
