Update: 4:23 p.m. – Officials with Owensboro Grain confirmed the liquid was soybean oil.

Original Story – Several blocks of Third Street are closed after a now-determined non-hazardous Hazmat spill from an Owensboro Grain product, according to City officials.

Third Street is closed from Locust to Elm Street.

Owensboro Fire Chief James Howard said the spill is not a hazard to the public. The agency was called after discovering liquid bubbling through the concrete after contractors broke a line.

Howard said the departments were notified at roughly 11:46 a.m. Members of Owensboro Fire, Police, Daviess County Emergency Management, Envision Contractors, and Owensboro Grain are all actively mitigating the situation.

Howard noted that the OFD first determined the spill was not an air hazard to the public, but the OFD and OPD are leading traffic control to allow the crews to clean the situation effectively.

“We understood it wasn’t a respiratory hazard. There was no need for an evacuation beyond making sure that we kept the traffic from coming through here,” Howard said.

Owensboro Grain and Envision Contractors crews are applying dirt to the area to stop the spread of the liquid and prevent it from entering the sewer lines, according to Howard.
