Whitesville Elementary School was honored with “Legacy School” status on Tuesday by the Leader in Me program. The title honors schools that effectively foster leadership and personal development among students, staff, and the community.
The Leader in Me program is based on Stephen Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” It aims to empower students with leadership and life skills and create a positive school culture centered around principles such as responsibility, accountability, and teamwork.
Whitesville Elementary School is one of the less than 20 schools worldwide that have been recognized as a Legacy School since the program began in 2017.
“This achievement is a reflection of the heart and hard work shown by our staff and students every single day. The Leader in Me process has transformed our school culture over the last 12 years, empowering our students to recognize their potential and take ownership of their learning through the development of essential leadership skills,” WES Principal Dr. Tricia Murphy said.
Daviess County Public Schools Director of Elementary Schools Leslie Peveler said that the award is a “significant milestone” for the school and district at large.
“It showcases our commitment to providing an exceptional educational experience that goes beyond academic achievement, focusing on the holistic development of our students,” Peveler said. “We are immensely proud of Whitesville Elementary for this well-deserved recognition.”
DCPS Superintendent Matt Robbins praised the work of Whitesville Elementary.
“This is a monumental honor that best exemplifies our district’s goal of excellence,” he said. The fact that only a small number of schools nationwide have achieved this level of recognition is a testament to the great school that WES represents. This achievement is made possible by a high-performing leadership team, faculty and staff, and students and families. This truly is a Kids First honor and I join our community in saying Braveo, we are so proud of you.”
