The Hager Educational Foundation has established a $100,000 scholarship fund for area students in the nursing programs at the Owensboro Extension for the University of Louisville School of Nursing.

Scholarship funds will be dedicated to students enrolled in either the 2nd Degree Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or the Traditional BSN. Funds will be awarded to deserving students in need based on merit.

“The scholarship was established to financially support current and future ULSON Owensboro students,” said Amy M. Higdon, DNP, RN, and assistant dean of Owensboro BSN programs. “Students have competing financial priorities while in nursing school. Some students are single parents who work, or have childcare expenses, mortgages, and car payments all while going to school full-time. This new scholarship can help alleviate these financial burdens.”

Higdon said the goal is to award $25,000 in scholarships each of the next 4 years. Amounts awarded will vary depending upon financial need, with approximately 10 students receiving scholarships annually.

Higdon also said the donor’s preference is that scholarships be given to students who indicate a desire to obtain employment in the Green River District Health Department area. The health department’s service area spans Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union, and Webster counties.

“All students in the program are from Owensboro or surrounding areas,” she said. “Preference is given to students in the Green River District Health Department service area to ensure graduates provide nursing care to residents in surrounding communities.”
