Girls’ Basketball recap (Feb. 23): OCHS, THS

Owensboro Catholic and Trinity both finished out their regular seasons as Catholic had a big win over Breckinridge and Trinity had a narrow loss against Portland Christian. Owensboro Catholic’s Hailee Johnson was also named Region 3 Player of the Year.

OCHS 80, Breckinridge Co. 64

Owensboro Catholic took to the road for their final regular season game against Breckinridge where they won 80-64. The Lady Aces finish with an impressive 25-4 record. 

Both teams got moving early on offense as OCHS gained a 20-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw Breckinridge outscore Catholic 14-12, but the Lady Aces still led 32-29 at halftime. Both teams came out with intensity in the third quarter as OCHS outscored Breckinridge 24-22. Catholic sealed the game in the final quarter after holding Breckinridge to 13 points while they scored 24 of their own. The final score was 80-64.

Leading the Lady Aces in scoring was Delaney Cooper with an impressive 5 threes and 23 points. Karmin Riley followed behind with 3 threes and 19 points. Hailee Johnson also scored 19 while shooting 7 of 9 on free throws. Jenna Krampe scored 10 points and shot 4 of 4 from the free throw line as well. 

Portland Christian 51, THS 48

Trinity had a close 51-48 defeat in their final game against Portland Christian. The Lady Raiders closed out their regular season with a record of 1-23. 

The game started out evenly as Protland only had a 1 point lead at 10-9 by the end of the first quarter. Ella Morris made 3 threes as part of her 11 points in the second to help THS take the lead at halftime at 25-20. The third quarter saw Portland take back over as they outscored Trinity 16-9. The final quarter saw both teams make an offensive push to take the win. Morris made another 3 threes in the fourth, but Trinity’s 14 points were just short of taking back the lead and they lost 51-48. 

Leading the Lady Raiders in scoring was Morris with 23 points and an impressive 7 threes. Sarah Payne followed behind with 14 points, and Kenzie McDowell made a three to go with her 11 points on the night as well.
