Boys’ Basketball recap (Feb. 22): DCHS, OCHS, THS

Daviess County, Owensboro Catholic and Trinity all finished out their regular season, and Owensboro’s final game against Butler County was canceled. The Panthers were victorious in their last game while the Aces and the Raiders weren’t as successful.

DCHS 86, Union Co. 49

Daviess County took to the road for their final game of the regular season where they had a big 86-49 win over Union County. The Panthers end their regular season with a record of 22-6

The Panthers took control of the game early as they held a 22-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Union kept the scoring close in the second quarter as DC outscored them 17-15 to lead 39-25 at halftime. DCHS upped the intensity in the third after Gage Phelps and DeAaron Watkins combined for 17 of the team’s 29 points. They had another strong 18-point performance in the final quarter to close out the win at 86-49. 

Daviess County had 5 players score in the double digits in their win. Watkins led the Panthers with 2 threes and 18 points. Phelps followed close behind with 16 points. Jonathan Moss made 2 threes as part of his 14 points. Ayden Ayer scored 12 points, and Luke Floyd had 2 threes to go with his 10 points as well.

University Heights 72, OCHS 69

Owensboro Catholic narrowly lost their away game against University Heights 72-69. The Aces end their regular season with a record of 19-8.

The game started out evenly as the first quarter ended 16-16. University Heights got ahead in the second after outsourcing OCHS 20-14 to lead 36-30 at halftime. Catholic took over in the third quarter as they took the lead after scoring 18 points to University’s 11. A scoring battle took place in the fourth quarter where Luke Beickman’s 10 points helped Catholic put up 21, but University Heights scored 25 and went on to win 72-69.

Leading the Aces in scoring was Beickman with 2 threes and 19 points while shooting 3 of 4 from the free throw line. Waryn Ebelhar followed close behind with 18 points and 4 of 4 on free throws. Solly Smith made 2 threes as part of his 12 points on the night as well.

McLean Co. 67, THS 32

Trinity stayed at home for their final regular season game as they hosted McLean County. Trinity were defeated 67-32, and they ended the regular season with a record of 2-26.

McLean held an early advantage as they led 14-9 at the end of the first quarter. THS found some success on offense with 10 points in the second quarter, but McLean scored 18 to extend their lead to 32-19 by halftime. Trinity were held to 13 points in the second half while McLean closed out the game at 67-32.

Leading the Raiders in scoring was Hayden Aull with 3 threes and 12 points. Connor Hatfield followed behind with 10 points on the night.
