KHSAA held both the Boys’ Girls’ State Wrestling Championships on Feb.15-17, and Daviess County’s Kali Nichols earned a 3rd place finish alongside Apollo’s Mayte Lopez who fought hard for a 4th place finish. DCHS, AHS, and OHS all had individualists compete in the inaugural girls’ tournament; and AHS and DCHS both had competitors in the boys’ tournament as well. Their top results from the past weekend included:
AHS
Apollo’s Mayte Lopez secured a 4th place finish in the inaugural KHSAA Girls’ Wrestling State Championship. Lopez was seeded 4th coming into the tournament, and she performed well despite facing a difficult bracket on her way to her placement. Lopez beat the #2 ranked wrestler in her bracket in the quarter finals before being defeated by the #1 ranked wrestler in the semis. She was then defeated by the #3 ranked wrestler to earn her spot at 4th.
On the boys’ team, Reigning Regional Champion Jake Ramsey went 2-2 on the day after being defeated by the 4th and 8th placers of his weight class. Patrick Glenn also went up against tough competition as he faced two regional champions during his 1-3 performance.
DCHS
Daviess County had three wrestlers in the girls’ state finals, and they were led by Kali Nichols who won all of her matches by pin fall and only lost one match which was to the undefeated returning champion of her weight class. Seventh graders Kaylee Klee and Callie Patton both went 0-2, but DC head coach Curtis Martinson said this was huge for them given they are middle schoolers wrestling high schoolers.
On the boys’ team, Aiden Ranburger and Jackson Stoner both made their debuts at the state tournament after placing 3rd in their respective weight classes at regionals. Stoner finished 2-2 on the day and Ranburger went 1-2.
OHS
Owensboro’s sole wrestler at the state tournament was Maya Montalvo. Montalvo was eliminated in the early rounds by the eventual runner-up of her weight class. Montalvo was proud of herself knowing she worked hard to qualify for and compete in the first ever KHSAA Girls’ State Wrestling Championship.
