Owensboro Catholic’s Deuce Sims signed to Central Alabama Community College to continue his baseball career at the collegiate level. Sims signed to be a Trojan on an athletic scholarship on Feb. 13 at Owensboro Catholic High School.
Sims has yet to complete his senior season with the Aces, but he is excited to see what college has to offer him as signing for Central Alabama was a dream come true, he said. One of the things that attracted Sims to Central Alabama was their head baseball coach Larry Thomas. Thomas is a former MLB player, thus someone Sims can learn valuable lessons from.
“Coach Hamilton knows him, and said that he’s an amazing coach to play for,” “I looked him up and he actually played in the MLB, so he knows a thing or two. So one, the coaching, and then they have a brand new weight room and indoor hitting facility. They just got it this year, so I’ll be coming right into it.”
Central Alabama Community College is a decent ways away from Owensboro, but this is something Sims does not mind. He never saw himself leaving home for college, but he wasn’t closed off to the idea either.
I’ve never thought about moving away,” he said. “I always thought I was going to be playing here. Once I went down there and visited it, I just loved it. The thought of being away hasn’t been too hard because I’ve been away before. I’ve had to go somewhere for sports for 2 weeks at a time and I was all good. I think I’ll handle it.”
Sims will play his final season of high school baseball with the Aces in the Spring. Last year Sims had the highest batting average on the team, was 4th on the team for most hits, was 3rd in RBIs and had a homerun to his name. With his final days of high school sports quickly approaching, Sims reflected on what he will miss the most.
“I really think I’ll miss the people around here,” he said. “Like at Owensboro Catholic we have a great community and amazing fans. I think I’ll miss everybody. From my classmates, to all the support that we have.”
