In the program’s first ever appearance in the state championship, Owensboro’s boys’ bowling team secured the runner-up spot. The silver medal finish comes after the program won their first regional title. Apollo placed 13th in the tournament, and Daviess County’s Madilyn Phelps also competed in the girls’ bowling state championship where she made the top 10.
The Red Devils were seeded 2nd going into the tournament, and they followed through after rolling through the competition in their first three matches. In their first match they took down Holy Cross (Louisville) 3-0 before moving on to beat Johnson Central 3-1 in the quarter finals. In the semifinals they went head-to-head against Pendleton County, and secured their place in the finals with another 3-1 victory. In the championship match they faced off against Louisville Pleasure Ridge Park. The Red Devils were defeated by PRP 3-0 to secure their runner-up finish.
Top bowlers for Owensboro included Eriksson Dean who bowled a 216, Christian Miller who scored a 215, Xavier Coomes who bowled a 210 and Tristan Miller bowled a 200. Andrew Christensen and Deghen Riggs contributed a 199 and a 182 respectively as well.
Apollo placed 13th in the state tournament after they were eliminated in the first round by champions PRP. Phelps competed in the State Girls’ Singles Competition for Daviess County, and she shot a 168, 160 and 205 for a 533 series. Phelps placed 10th overall to close out her 6th and final year.
