Johnny Maxwell 92, of Calhoun, Kentucky passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at his home near Calhoun. Johnny Dodson Maxwell was born September 30, 1931 in Butler County, Kentucky to the late Oda and Mary Etta Dodson Maxwell and was married to the former Dorothy Louise Jennings on October 1, 1949. Johnny’s life was a testament to the love and devotion he had for his family and community.

A man of many talents and interests, Johnny retired as a painter from Chrysler Motor Company in St. Louis. His work ethic and dedication to his craft were admired by many and set an example for his children and grandchildren to follow. Even after retirement, Johnny continued to find joy and purpose in his hobbies. His love for woodworking and gardening kept him busy and allowed him to create beauty and sustenance for his family and friends. His handcrafted pieces and bountiful harvests were a source of pride and joy.

Johnny was also a dedicated servant to his faith and community. He was a longtime caretaker of Mt. Vernon Baptist Cemetery, a role he performed with reverence and care. His commitment to this sacred duty was a reflection of his deep respect for the departed and the loved ones they left behind. As a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Johnny’s faith was unwavering and provided him with strength and comfort throughout his life.

Johnny’s life was a tapestry woven with threads of love, hard work, and faith. He was a man who led by example and believed in the power of kindness and dedication.

In addition to his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by a daughter, Yvonne Craig.

Johnny is survived by his wife of 74 years, Dorothy Maxwell; a son, Darrell Maxwell (Eva) of Calhoun; three daughters, Vicki Austin of Calhoun, Donna Luck (Kenny) of Hawesville and Joy Pannell (Hal) of Calhoun; three great-grandchildren, that he raised as his own children, Leviticus Luck, Valorie Luck and Nicole Luck; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-granddaughters; and a very special friend, who was like his own daughter, Becky Wilson of Sebree.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel. Burial will be in the Mt. Vernon Baptist Cemetery in McLean County. Friends may visit with Johnny’s family from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Friday and from 9:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Saturday at Musters in Calhoun.

The Maxwell family would like to express the appreciation to the Beech Grove Volunteer Fire Department, Brad Baird, Keith Crabtree, and Tony Winstead, who were each always there to lend Johnny a helping hand.
