At the request of its students, Kentucky Wesleyan College will host an inaugural Multicultural Festival on April 27. The event will feature several vendors, food trucks, live performers, and more.
Coordinator of Equity and Inclusion Lori Thurman said students struggle to attend the annual Multicultural Festival held at First Presbyterian Church because it typically coincides with move-in week. So, KWC officials reached out to the church for a blessing and guidance and began planning their own.
“The event is open to campus and the entire community,” Thurman said. “Our campus is very diverse, with 34 international students and several ethnicities. We’ve already had 30 vendors register. We’re eager to get this off the ground.”
Some performances include a lunar lion dance by an Asian dance crew, performances by Owensboro Public Schools groups, and GRADSA’s dance squads. The International Center will also be on site, hosting interactive activities.
“The students were the catalyst behind the event,” she said. “This is a way for them to show the community who KWC is and who they are.”
Several student organizations, including athletic teams, fraternities, sororities, and other extracurricular clubs, are participating in the event. Thurman said she’s overwhelmed by the initial support and expects far more vendors once she advertises the event.
It is free to attend or be a vendor at the festival. The event will take place on KWC’s quad in the heart of campus, moving to the Wells Center in the event of rain.
