Owensboro Catholic suffered a heartbreaking exit from the All “A” State tournament after losing to Pikeville in the semifinals. Apollo secured another win on the road while Owensboro and Trinity both suffered close losses.
Pikeville 59, OCHS 52
The Lady Aces were eliminated from the All “A” State semifinals after a close 59-52 loss against a tough Pikeville team.
Owensboro Catholic had an early advantage as they secured a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Pikeville struck back in the second quarter as they outscored OCHS 13-8 to take a 1-point lead at halftime at 23-22. A scoring battle ensued in the third quarter that saw Catholic fall slightly further behind as they were barely outscored 19-17. OCHS fell just short of securing their spot in finals as Pikeville held them to 13 points while they scored 17. The Lady Aces lost 59-52.
Leading the Lady Aces in scoring was Jenna Krampe who scored 17 points and went 9 of 10 on free throws. Aubrey Randolph followed behind with 13 points as well as shooting 4 of 6 fromt he line.
AHS 55, Warren Central 44
Jennifer Lee’s 28-point double-double led Apollo to a close 55-44 victory over Warren Central.
The game started evenly as Apollo only trailed by 3 points at the end of the first quarter with Warren leading 13-10. The E-gals had a big defensive quarter in the second as they held Warren to just 2 points while Lee’s 10 points helped AHS to a 26–12 lead at halftime. Warren’s offense got up and moving again in the second as they outscored Apollo 15-14. Apollo’s offense closed out the game by scoring 13 points to Warren’s 14. The final score was 55-44.
Lee’s 28 points, 12 rebounds and 6 out of 8 free throws led the E-gals on both ends of the court. Jenna Dant followed behind with 12 points on the night.
Henderson 56, OHS 48
Owensboro fell short in a tough battle against Henderson County that saw them lose 56-48.
They fell behind early in the first quarter as they struggled to contain Henderson’s 22 points, and they trailed 22-10 going into the second. OHS had more success on defense as they only allowed Henderson 12 points, but they could only score 8 on defense and went into halftime trailing 34-18. Owensboro began to claw their way back into the game as Shalyn Sprinkles’ 8 points helped them to 16 points in the quarter while holding Henderson to 9. The Lady Red Devils’ final 14- point offensive push was thwarted as Henderson kept up with them with 13 points in the final quarter to take the game at 56-48.
Sprinkles led the Lady Red Devils in scoring with 24 points, 4 three points, and 100 FT% with 6 of 6 from the line. Unique Carter-Swanagan had the next highest points with 10 on the night.
St. Mary 49, THS 46
In a game that had to be settled in overtime, Trinity narrowly lost a 49-46 against St. Mary on the road.
Trinity fell behind early as they trailed 17-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Raiders flipped the script in the second quarter as they held St. Mary just 6 points while they closed the gap down to just 2 with 14 points of their own. Trailing just barely at 23-21 going into the third, THS saw the lead begin to get farther away as they were outscored 13-9. The final quarter saw the Lady Raiders retake control of the game as they held St. Mary to just 5 points while they scored 11 and tied the game at 41-41 by the end of regulation. Both teams had a crucial three-pointer in overtime, but Trinity lost on free throws as St. Mary went 5 for 6 from the line while Trinity shot 2 of 4. St. Mary took the close win with a final score of 49-46.
The Lady Raiders had 3 players score in the double digits to lead the charge. Kenzie McDowell led the team with 13 points, 2 threes, and a high FT% shooting 3 of 4 from the line. Ella Morris made 2 threes to contribute to her 12 points on the night, and Sarah Payne scored 11 points while shooting 4 of 6 on free throws.
