Apollo’s Michael Chaney’s baseball career is set to continue at the collegiate level after he signed to play for KWC. Chaney will play his final high school season in the Spring, and he already has his final goal set.
Before making an impressive run to the semifinals in the state championship, Apollo were crowned 3rd Region Champions last season after defeating Muhlenberg County in the championship game. At his signing at Burns Elementary, Chaney thanked everyone who supported him before declaring that he wants to bring home the regional title one final time before officially becoming a Panther.
Once Chaney does become a Panther, it will be a dream come true for him, he said. Playing at the collegiate level was a dream he set when he was young, and to go to a school that is right down the road makes it that much better, he said. Chaney said he was won over by the coaching staff and the campus itself.
“The coaches just treated me almost like I was their kid,” he said. “It was like they’ve known me for years. The campus was just beautiful. I love the class sizes as well. The guys there, I’ve talked to some of them and they were really good to me.”
Although going to college in your hometown has its benefits Chaney acknowledged the one downside.
“It’s got its positives and negatives,” he said. “I’m always close to home, so I can go back and forth, and if I need something it’s right there. The only bad thing is I really wanted to get away and experience college things by myself.”
With his high school days coming to an end, Chaney reflected on the simple things he enjoyed about playing for Apollo.
“Probably the late bus rides after the game,” he said. “Where you just talk with all the guys and the coaches whether we won or lost. That’s the biggest part. The clubhouse experience with all the guys as well was really nice.”
