Cameron Mills — the University of Kentucky (UK) basketball team walk-on who earned a full scholarship and was a part of two NCAA championship teams — will speak in Owensboro on Tuesday at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Champions of Change Dinner. He’ll also stop at local schools to share his story with students.
Jeff Moran, FCA area director of Northwest Kentucky, is excited for guests to hear Mills speak at the banquet and in the schools.
“We are bringing Cameron in on Sunday night. He will speak at FCA at different schools in our area on Monday and Tuesday,” Moran said.
After hearing Mills speak at a banquet in Bowling Green, the planners of the Owensboro FCA event knew he’d be the perfect addition to their fundraising event.
“Cameron shared about his experience playing basketball at UK— from walking on to becoming a scholarship player and winning national championships in 1994 and 1996. He also shared how his successes affected him spiritually and personally,” he said.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is an organization that offers opportunities for students to lead within their schools through small groups, huddle groups, and leading lessons.
“We have the largest sports ministry organization in the country. We have clubs that meet in the schools, character coaching, and ministry with athletes during their season,” Moran said.
In addition to fundraising efforts for the organization, organizers believe bringing Mills to Owensboro will be a win-win.
“We knew he would be speaking at the dinner but also impacting the community, and we liked that idea,” Moran said.
The banquet will be held at His Church from 6-7:30 on Tuesday.
“There is no cost for the dinner. We will ask for donations at the end of the dinner to benefit our 9-county district,” Moran said. “I’m looking forward to sharing what God has been doing in our area through FCA and through coaching athletes. God is at work in our school systems through coaches and athletes.”
