When Disney released the movie Encanto in 2021, it soared at the box office and won the award of Best Animated film of the year. At the Annie awards, it received three awards, and followed up with three Oscar nominations. The Madrigals are an extraordinary family living in an enchanted home, Encanto, and life seems simply perfect, except for one little daughter, Mirabel, who can’t quite find her gift within the family. Family secrets begin to emerge and harmony is disrupted as Mirabel searches for her gift, and life is not as perfect as it seems for the Madrigal family. Their home begins to crack-LITERALLY, and figuratively- until a confrontation and finally, a resolution restores peace within the home. Confused? Go watch it; your kids will love it! My point?

Every family suffers ‘cracks’ at different times in life. Some families have been blessed with leadership and problem solving training, the skills to cope during hard times; other families do not enjoy this luxury. When a family suffers trauma, the kids are the ones who truly suffer the blows. CASA recognizes the severe mental strain that transpires in a child when home life is unstable; therefore, CASA exists to act as advocates for children. CASA of Ohio Valley trains and supervises community volunteers who advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children in the family court systems in Daviess, McLean, and Hancock Counties. CASA wants to give every child the opportunity to grow up in a stable environment and will spend many hours working to make it happen!

If you’ve ever felt the urge to foster or adopt but know it isn’t right for your family you can still serve abused or neglected children. Check out CASA at https://youtu.be/DhSGMCjDsqI?si=G44vRsJdmmcwfAj_you can make a difference in the life of a child who truly needs stability. C.S. Lewis famously wrote, “Children are not a distraction from more important work. They are the most important work.” Join CASA in caring for the children in our community!
