
Joseph E. Coomes, Jr., 97, of Stanley passed away on October 21, 2023, peacefully at his home. He was born on August 22, 1926, to the late Joseph E. Coomes, Sr. and Florence Coomes.
Joe was a World War II Veteran. He was a hard-working master builder. He was also a farmer and a pillar of his community. He was a member of St. Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Joe was known as a master burgoo chef. Primarily, he was a dedicated family man who raised 10 children and has a long line of descendants.
Along with his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruby Jean Fogle Coomes; a grandson, Jonathan; a brother, Malcolm; and sisters, Helen and Bernette.
Joe is survived by his children, Ellie (Dusty) Thompson of Mt. Olivet, Kentucky, Jerry (Mona), Pat (Joy), Mark (Pam) of Florida, Allen (Cindy), Bruce, Albert (Mishiele), Frankie (Leann), Mike (Nancy) of Henderson, and Donnie (Jan); 25 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandson.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at St. Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church. Burial to follow at St. Peter Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Haley McGinnis Funeral Home & Crematory, with prayers being said at 7:30 p.m., and visitation again on Thursday, October 26, 2023, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
