The building at 3415 Frederica Street that has formerly housed Wendy’s, Tokyo, and Shogun Express is being demolished by Hayden Construction. According to Steve Hayden, his construction crews are making way for a new Scooter’s Coffee, identical to the one on KY 54.

Hayden and his team actually erected the building in 1977, and it served as a Wendy’s for most of its lifespan until the fast-food chain moved further south to 4565 Frederica Street. In the early 2000s, the building housed Tokyo, a hibachi-style restaurant, before becoming Shogun Express in 2019.

Shogun Express closed in September 2022, and the building has remained vacant since.

Representatives from Scooter’s Coffee could not immediately be reached for comment. The national drive-thru coffee franchise opened its first Owensboro location on KY 54 in January of this year. The restaurant describes itself as a “standalone, drive-thru only kiosk.”

The Scooter’s menu includes an array of specialty espresso beverages, single-origin coffee, fruit smoothies, Red Bull Infusions, Cold Brew, baked-from-scratch pastries, and breakfast options. For more about their menu or business, click here.

The Owensboro Times first reported in August of 2022 that Scooter’s Coffee was planning two locations in Owensboro — the first at 2805 East Parrish Avenue. A spokesperson at the time said the second Owensboro location and the one in Henderson had yet to be determined “but should begin construction within the next two years after locations are finalized.”

Founded in 1998 by Don and Linda Eckles in Bellevue, Nebraska, Scooter’s Coffee roasts coffee beans at its headquarters in Omaha. The Scooter’s Coffee Brand Promise is “Amazing People, Amazing Drinks… Amazingly Fast!”

Scooter’s Coffee has nearly 300 stores operating across 17 states.
