It was referred to as Black Thursday, October 29th, 1929, the day the Stock Market crashed, spiraling the U.S. into absolute despair, the greatest economic crisis ever experienced. When Ida Omer was born in 1937, the damage of the crash was still ravaging through every city, destroying the livelihood and stability of too many families. It is no wonder, then, that when Ida was moved to a nursing home in 2018, hundreds of canned goods and milk jugs of water were discovered in the basement of her home, a stash to survive the next Depression. “Better safe than sorry,” she replied when questioned. Ida has a plethora of stories to share about her past. Beauty pageants and old ‘beaus’; the switchboard at the phone company and the jitterbug on Friday nights. Ida isn’t just an old lady with a perm and a rickety walker; Ida is a treasure chest of memories, a vault of wisdom, and a beautiful portrayal of endurance. Anyone who has survived the Great Depression has grit, real grit. The strength in Ida’s mind far surpasses the strength of her body, though both have been sadly dwindling the last five years. But that doesn’t make her life any less valuable. Her stories still deserve to be heard. Her wrinkles merely indicate where smiles have been (thank you, Mark Twain)!
Faithful Friends Ministry agrees! Ida is only one of the many beautiful souls living in a nursing home because her body has failed her. Faithful Friends believes we can still show her that her life is valuable by simply being a friend. The goal of the organization is to link youth groups, churches, small groups, families with children, ANYBODY WILLING (ahem), with specific nursing homes so monthly, even weekly visits may follow. Feeling nervous about starting? Not sure how to approach a resident? Faithful Friends wants to help you! They understand your hesitancies; they have lived through them! You can do this! Ida needs you! Let’s be certain at the end of our own lives that some of our wrinkles are reflections of where our smiles have been from serving others!
