In 1996, Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony produced its first number one hit, “Tha Crossroads,” which blared from the busted speakers of every college student from here to San Francisco. Selling over 10 million copies worldwide, the band put itself on the map. So while I am deeply ashamed to admit my familiarity with the song, is it any wonder that my first reaction to the name of the local nonprofit Crossroads was a desire to stand up and dance? (Warning: a more mature and responsible reader will not be accustomed to such tunes and shouldn’t search it!)
My blaring ignorance on the organization prompted a desire to research, and what I found was incredible. In essence, Crossroads creates a ‘crossroad’ in the Owensboro community, the point at which a decision to serve others generates far-reaching ripples. Relationships come first, and through interaction, the heart of everyone involved is changed. Homeless women are offered a safe place to sleep with their children by night; all who are hungry are fed by day. In Jeremiah 6:16, the Lord said to his people, “You are standing at the crossroads. So consider your path. Ask where the old, reliable paths are. Ask where the path is that leads to blessing and follow it. If you do, you will find rest for your souls.” I ask you to reflect on your life today. Do you feel true rest in your soul? Or do you feel anxiety? Perhaps it is time for you to approach the Crossroads and see what rest for your soul volunteering can provide! You will not regret it! Watch this inspiring video at www.ProjectVolunteer.org and see what others are giving to the community. Become a volunteer!
