Grace Christian Academy is hosting an invitational volleyball tournament at the Owensboro Convention Center. Junior varsity play was held on Monday, while the varsity competition will take place all day Tuesday.

The tournament consists of eight schools from the Kentucky Christian Athletic Association. In addition to host GCA, teams include Bethel Christian Academy from McDaniels; Legacy Christian Academy from Bowling Green; Holy Angels Academy, Immaculata Classical Academy, and Valiant Christian Academy, all from Louisville; Galilean Christian Academy from Liberty; and Summit Christian Academy from Lexington.

Holy Angels Academy won the JV championship against runner-up Legacy Christian Academy.

The tournament is sponsored by Visit Owensboro, and GCA athletic director Mike Dechman said they were a huge help in bringing the event to Owensboro.

“They have a set of requirements that they use to determine their level of support for events,” Dechman said. “Thankfully our event met enough of their requirements to merit substantial support. We could not have hosted the event without their help and are thankful they partnered with us to host the event.”

Founded in 2018 by a group of families from evangelical churches in the area, GCA opened its doors to students in the fall of 2020, initially with only a freshman high school class. They’ve added one high school grade level per year, and the upcoming group of seniors will be the first to graduate from GCA. The school has also since added a program that included preschool and kindergarten classes. With the addition of grades 1-4 this August, GCA is continuing to expand its offerings beyond the original high school grades planned.

GCA sports program currently offers cross country, volleyball, boys basketball, bass fishing and golf. The school hopes to add girls basketball, cheer, softball, archery and esports this year, according to Dechman.
