With the high school season quickly approaching, Daviess County’s Grant Broughton got a strong tune-up by competing in the 2023 Future Masters Tournament last week.
For the tournament that ran from June 17 to June 24, Broughton was invited to this tournament by submitting a resume earlier this year. Playing amongst competition from multiple different age groups that are considered some of the brightest in the golf scene, Grant was thrilled to have the chance to compete in the tournament despite some early challenges because of rain.
“I was excited, but nervous,” Broughton said. “I didn’t get to play a practice round on the course because of poor weather so finding my way around the course on day one was tough… It means so much to get the opportunity to play in such a great tournament.”
Broughton finished with a 78 in round one, 74 in round two and an 84 in round three. His efforts placed him in the company of the elite competitors from the tournament, something he’s proud of despite a rocky finish.
“Overall I was partially pleased with how I played,” Broughton said. “I made the cut and was in the top 100 players out of 250 after two days and that was one of my main goals. I was disappointed with how I played in my final round, but I wouldn’t have even gotten the opportunity to play the final day if I didn’t play well the first two days.”
Broughton is looking forward to trying to compete in the tournament again in the future, but first he has some other tournaments to get to in order to prepare him for his junior season that is quickly approaching—one in which he has a number of goals to reach including First Team All-State, winning regionals and semi-state and to get top-five at state.
“I do really hope to compete in this tournament again,” Broughton said. “It was a lot of fun and a wonderful opportunity. I am playing in a few more tournaments before the high school season. I’m traveling to Lexington from the Kentucky Junior Amateur and then a few weeks after I’m traveling to Pinehurst, NC to compete in the US Kids World Teen championship again.”
