A major cycling event returns to Owensboro this Saturday with the Bluegrass Century ride. More than 300 riders are expected to participate in the ride that spans across Daviess and McLean counties. Motorists going near the routes should use extra caution through the morning and early afternoon (maps of routes inside story).
This year’s event will see the return of the Kentucky Cycling Challenge, and proceeds will benefit Young Life of Owensboro.
“Once again, the Bluegrass Century is back on the Kentucky Cycling Challenge this year, and this has allowed our ride to grow exponentially over the past 2 years,” said Keith Johnson, one of the organizers of the Bluegrass Century. “Being a part of the Kentucky Cycling Challenge will bring more visitors to our community and we’re excited to welcome all of them. Last year, we had riders from 10 different states and one from the United Kingdom participating in the ride and we hope to broaden our reach this year.”
The ride will be held Saturday and will offer three routes for riders of all ages and experience. Riders under 18 must be accompanied by an adult and must sign a minor registration form. The event includes a century route (100 miles), a metric century (69 miles) and a 32-mile route.
All riders will begin their route at 7 a.m., and riders will be welcomed with fully stocked rest stops along the way, no matter which distance a rider chooses.
All routes will start and end at Crosspointe Baptist Church located at 550 Worthington Road in Owensboro. Parking will be available on site.
