Officials have identified the victim in Saturday’s homicide on Hughes Avenue as 16-year-old Demarion Black. The Owensboro Police Department also announced a 16-year-old male juvenile has been charged with murder in this case.

According to a release, at approximately 9:11 p.m. Saturday OPD responded to a shooting in the 1800 block of Hughes Avenue. Officers arrived at the scene and located a juvenile male with multiple gunshot wounds, according to OPD.

According to the release, officers immediately began providing life-saving measures until AMR Ambulance and the Owensboro Fire Department arrived on scene and took over medical care. The victim was transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, where he later died as a result of his injuries, according to OPD. The Daviess County Coroner’s Office identified Black as the victim on Monday.

OPD said officers secured the area Saturday night, and the Criminal Investigations Division was called to assist. Detectives processed the scene, conducted interviews, and canvassed the area.

According to the release, on Monday OPD developed a suspect in the shooting. The suspect was taken into custody and interviewed, then was charged and transported to the Warren County Regional Juvenile Detention Center.

Because the suspect is a juvenile, his identity cannot be released at this time according to state law. In addition to murder, the suspect has been charged with possession of a handgun by a minor.

Owensboro Times first reached out Saturday night about a potential shooting, and at 10 p.m. was told it was “too early in the investigation for information to be released” — so OT was unable to officially confirm there had been a shooting or if there was a victim. Just before midnight, an official with Owensboro Health Regional Hospital said they were working with OPD on a situation but could not elaborate due to privacy protection laws. That official could not confirm if the hospital had taken in a patient with a gunshot wound, instead deferring to OPD for more information.

At 9:36 a.m. Sunday morning, OPD confirmed the investigating was regarding a shooting that resulted in the death of a 16-year-old male. The victim’s identity and information about the arrest was released at 5:48 p.m. Monday.

Anyone with additional information can call OPD at 270-687-8888, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 270-687-8484.
