Former Daviess County quarterback Joe Humphreys announced his commitment to Murray State University on June 9th after transferring from Miami (OH) University.
Humphreys was a three-year starter under center for the Panthers, leading them to an 11-2 record and Daviess County’s first district championship in over a decade during his senior campaign. He led the entire state in passing yards and touchdowns with 3,940 yards and 48 touchdowns, as well as 17 rushing touchdowns.
The 6’4 signal caller was deemed a three-star recruit by 24/7 Sports and held 12 Division I offers including Temple, UAB, and New Mexico.
Humphreys committed to Miami (OH) in December of 2021. Humphreys enrolled early after graduation last May and spent the summer on campus in Oxford, OH.
“I really enjoyed my time [at Miami],” Humphreys said. “I met lots of great people and made several friends that I’ll be friends with for the rest of my life.”
Humphreys redshirted his first collegiate season and entered the transfer portal in April with four years of eligibility remaining.
“The portal is just like being recruited all over again,” Humphreys said. “However, this time instead of the coaches really recruiting you hard, you have to do a lot more on your part. A lot of schools are already loaded in the QB room.”
Murray State offered Humphreys in high school and have continued to diligently pursue him the second time around. This consistency led to his decision to return to the Commonwealth to be a Racer.
“Murray’s coaching staff was the most consistent as far as showing interest throughout the process, Humphreys said. “I was on the phone with them just a couple hours after I entered the portal and they constantly stayed in touch and maintained a relationship with me. I’m very excited to get there and get to work.”
Joe credits a lot of his success to Daviess County Offensive Coordinator Dalton Oliver, who also played quarterback at the collegiate and professional level.
“I have worked with Coach Oliver a lot over the past three or four years which has helped me tremendously,” Humphreys said. “I am very lucky to have a coach like him who will put everything they have into making me a better player and person. He has a lot of knowledge about the quarterback position and has played at the pro level, so having him by my side has been a huge blessing.”
Humphreys has been coached by Oliver since his sophomore season and is using this unusual offseason to soak up as much knowledge as he can from Oliver, who has played multiple years of professional football overseas and here in the United States.
“There is always room for improvement when it comes to the actual mechanics of throwing the ball, but at this time I’m really invested in fully grasping defensive schemes and getting ahead in the playbook,” Humphreys said. “So when my number is called, I will be more than ready.”
The Racers will kick off the 2023 season at Roy Stewart Stadium on September 2nd as they host Presbyterian College at 6 p.m.
