Owensboro Catholic have All-A State go as planned this past weekend, defeating St. Mary but falling to Union County and Walton-Verona.

Game one vs Union County

It was too little too late for the Aces on Friday, as they were unable to get offensively until the final two innings of play in a 4-3 home loss to Union County.

Eighth grader Lane Hundley was dealing in his start on the mound, helping Owensboro Catholic go into the fourth in a 0-0 ballgame. The Braves came alive in the fourth though, using a myriad of singles to grab a pair of runs while adding one more in the top of the fifth on an RBI double that left the Aces trailing 3-0 going into the sixth.

Owensboro Catholic bounced back in the bottom of the sixth by scoring a run on a Union County error, but the Braves quickly retaliated with one in the top of the seventh to make it 4-1. The Aces didn’t bow out though, as a one-out walk led to an RBI triple by senior Grant Parson and an RBI single from senior Jamison Wall to cut it to a 4-3 game.

That would be all they would get though, as Owensboro Catholic popped out and lined out to end the game in the 4-3 loss as a result.

Parson, Wall and freshman Mason Moser led the way at the plate, all recording an RBI each while Wall, freshman Barrett Evans and sophomore Brady Atwell all had two hits each. Hundley took the loss in his five-inning start, allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks, while also striking out four.

Senior Thomas Eyre handled the final two innings in relief, allowing one unearned run on a hit and a walk while striking out four.

Game two vs St. Mary

Owensboro Catholic bounced back on Saturday, as their offense came alive and a no-hitter from senior Grant Parson helped them grab a 9-0 win.

Parson was on fire throughout the seven-inning performance on the mound, allowing just one walk and striking out ten to get the win. Parson also had an RBI on the day, joining sophomore Parker Heistand, YEAR Mason Moser and YEAR Houston Flynn who also had one RBI each.

It was junior Deuce Sims who led the way at the plate though, grabbing a pair of RBIs on a home run to center field in the top of the third.

Game three vs Walton-Verona

The Aces journey in the All A State Classic came to an end on Sunday though, as late offense wasn’t enough and they fell 5-4 to Walton Verona in extra innings.

Things were looking bleak for Owensboro Catholic going into the bottom of the seventh inning, having given up a run in the top of the fifth and sixth to trail 2-0. It was Sims that helped the Aces get going again though, as a one-out single and a one-out double from freshman Barrett Evans put runners in scoring position.

Heistand proceeded to plate a run with a groundout the following at-bat, with Flynn tying things up at 2-2 on an RBI single to force extra innings. But a pair of Aces errors led to two of the three Walton-Verona runs in the ninth and 10th inning, while Owensboro Catholic was only able to score two more runs in the 5-4 loss.

Evans had a solid start, allowing one unearned run on two hits, four walks and five strikeouts in five innings. Wall took the loss in his last five innings though, allowing one earned run—four total—allowing seven hits and three walks while striking out one.

Evans was also one two players to record an RBI in the game, grabbing one while Flynn had a pair. The Aces now sit at 16-9 overall following the weekend, as they now prepare for a district matchup with Owensboro at home at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
