The Kentucky Youth Chorale is presenting its annual free spring concert, titled “Shining Our Light,” tonight at Third Baptist Church. Following the concert will be a fundraiser dinner, with money raised going toward allowing the group to sing at a festival next October.

Director Madison Wells said the concert includes eight songs, all a variety of spirituals of different backgrounds and styles. She said the music being the same genre has helped the youth and directors attach to it.

“They have different emotional connections, different styles. So it’s engaging for the kids, and this semester especially they have just really taken ownership of their music-making,” Wells said.

The choir is made up of students ages 7-14, which is a unique experience as they don’t usually get to work within that range.

Wells said the older students often get to help the younger ones, while the younger students bring a spark of energy that is great to the experience for all.

“There is nothing better in the world and listening to children sing, and I promise that this concert has something for everyone. So if you’re thinking about coming, you should go for it because I promise you will walk away with a smile on your face and a song in your heart,” she said.

The concert begins at 6 p.m. Immediately following will be a ticketed dinner to help raise money to attend the Hoosier Hills Choral Festival in October 2024. Wells said they were invited to sing at the festival recently. The funds raised would go toward transportation and other fees to participate in the festival along with other general fund expenses.

Tickets for the dinner are $20 per person and $85 for a family of five. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Third Baptist Church is located at 527 Allen Street.
